_My Thoughts
My thoughts today emerge from my childhood.
Recently, it was my turn to provide a prompt in a small group of poets that I meet with one evening a month. The prompt I gave to the group is to write about a special place where you are free to relax and think, or be creative, or simply to take a rest for a while.
Immediately, I remembered some of the special, secret places of my childhood days. I wrote about them in my poem, “The Hiding Place.”
Since I am currently at work on my next book of poetry, I’ll save this poem to include in my book. The new book will be _Gatekeeper: Poems of Faith”. More on that as the manuscript progresses towards the day when I will be submitting it to the editor and designer at DLD Books, in Colorado.

Currently, I have special places in my home where I can find solitude, pray, read, and meditate on the ideas and inspirations that come to me.
One room in my home is my “Library.” In this place, I enjoy my morning coffee, spend time in prayer at the beginning of each day, and read books with the help of my Merlin CCTV. That is a special closed-circuit TV that enlarges the text so that I can actually read a book. I can turn the pages, and read as long as I like, in this special hiding place.
My collection of poetry books is in this room, as well as a long table where I can work for ordinary activities such as writing checks to pay bills or writing notes to send to friends occasionally. It is also perfect to use when I bring in the daily mail. The Merlin enables me to read each piece of mail, and sort it out. Some mail is kept, and other mail goes directly into the trash. There is so much “junk mail” these days that I have several to discard each morning.
This room gets the first rays of light in the early mornings. It has a window to the East, and one large bay window to the South-West. It’s bright and cheerful from early morning to late afternoon. Another special thing in this room is an old blue velvet chair. We always refer to this chair as “Mitchell’s Chair.”
Mitchell was a dog we found one wintry day in the woods near our home. Someone had abandoned her there in November 2009. She was about 6 months old, according to the vet, and she became our special dog. This blue velvet chair was where she loved to spend time napping or watching out the windows. She was truly a “watch dog,” and sounded the alarm by barking vigorously every day of her life.
I love to sit in Mitchell’s chair early morning before daylight and have my first cup of coffee for the day. I feel Mitchell’s presence, in my memories, every day as I am in this room which is my hiding place. Miss Mitchell left for her eternal home at the age of sixteen. A dog that someone else considered to be trashed to throw away, we enjoyed for sixteen years of faithful watching and protecting our home. In a sense, this room is also Mitchell’s hiding place as her memories linger there forever as I sip my coffee in the morning.

This room is also my prayer closet. From this room, I sit and pray for people around the world. There is no limit to the people I pray for. Whoever God brings to my mind each day, is who I pray for. This is also the hiding place where I begin the day with God. I put on “the armor of God” each day, and you can read more about that divine protection that is available to all believers in the Bible.
To read more about this way of praying:
The other place in my home where I have a hiding place is my office. This room is a step down from my kitchen. I have a phone in this room, bookshelves, my computer, and another CCTV. This special CCTV is a Quartz, and it works perfectly for me to be able to actually read from the screen, which is on a table right beside my computer. I can type on the computer, and glancing at the enlarged texts or photos on the Quartz – back and forth.
I do not use a cell phone any longer. It was just not practical for me, and I hated the expense of it every month, when I really do not need to have a phone that I carry around. My house phones work perfectly well for any need I have to communicate from my home.
How about you?
Where are your hiding places where you can be alone to pray, read, think, or create?
Do you have a special “prayer closet” where you go to be alone with God each day?
I’d love to hear about your Hiding Places, too.
