Underhanded Secrets of March

Layers of last fall’s muddy golden-brown Ginkgo leaves overlay
brilliant new yellow and purple crocus blossoms
spiraling in the air
beside stodgy, bottle-green
stalks of hyacinths
Touch the curled tulip plants
rising from bulbs that weathered the storms
of winter months and icy rain showers.
Try to find rays of sunshine.

Lofty, bare lilac bushes hold
resident cardinals who trill in the morning hours
chant their desires for warmer days
With gentle winds.

What underhanded secret has March
hidden in her puffed-up sleeves?
Will we stand shivering in cold wintry winds?
On the final day of her departure?

Will March take a leave-of-absence
like a thunderous lion’s
bellowing rage across the valley.

But, wait!
Clever March may have one more wild card up her sleeve.

  I am a very slow writer – this poem took the entire day to write.
  I go through dozens of edits, do research in everything I write about, and I just keep on moving things about and taking things in, and out, and eventually, it feels just right to me. Then, I publish it. I like this poem a lot. It sure fits this day –
