“Sassy Red Hat” in Memory of my Mother

The Poem:
Sassy Red Hat
My Mother is a matronly queen
She poses against
a brilliant background
of shimmering sun-light on
yellow-green foliage.
She sits upright, her head tilted.
Bold and proud.
She lifts her delicate chin
Her softly painted red lips smile.
My Mother’s twisted gnarled hands
Are clasped gently together
folded in the lap
of her floral-patterned dress.
Tiny red roses bloom on leafy ivory vines
like delicate crewel embroidery
of finest thin wool yarn stitched
over black silk background.
Esther’s bright hazel eyes sparkle
beneath the brim of her scarlet red hat
On a hot September afternoon
she smiles confidently into the future.
She has no worries for today.
She’s relaxed. Comfortable.
My Mother has forgotten losses
sorrows, and tears.
In the afternoon we will sing together.
You are sunlight
Contented.
Satisfied.
In your sassy red hat!
