Her middle name is pronounced in French
Daughter of William Joseph and Esther Luella
Bill was orphaned at 3 when
Effie Pearl died from Spanish influenza
Bill was Irish and German, with red hair
Drafted into war before Virgo Girl’s birth.
Virgo girl arrived on a Friday
in August, 1943
Esther wrote letters to Europe
sent daily photos of Virgo Girl

every day for 2 years.
“Daddy is a piece of glass,” she thought.
Virgo Girl is the granddaughter of
a German woman who baked
yeast-breads, frosted cookies,
clover-leaf rolls and apple pies
Her grandfather, James Addison,
sat at the kitchen table
used his 3-pronged fork
teased Ida, called her Dutch.
Virgo girl never knew her father’s family

well-known for his baseball skills
Effie’s obituary states she
was an honorable mother of five?
only two of five red-haired children
survived to adulthood.

from Eastern European Jews
Greeks & Iberian ancestors.
Virgo Girl finds themes in Heaven
stars and timeless boundaries
poems and Ginkgo trees
peridot and garnets
black crows and feral cats.
Friday’s Child is loving and giving
Daughter of women who tend old-fashioned
pink roses and lily-of-the valley,
