The Poem:
recollections of sanctuary
recollections of sanctuary
I recollect my early Sanctuary
photos of Grandma and me
beside her summer garden
pink roses she cherished
vintage black and white moments
smiling, relaxed, secure.
Mom’s snapshots reveal secure
family, home, sanctuary
birthday parties, rare moments
our chickens, a dog, and me
a birthday cake I cherished
standing beside Dad’s Garden.
moon flowers, zinnias, marigolds in our garden
followed Dad’s footprints, I was secure
watering the seeds, we cherished
our backyard, a private sanctuary
two brothers, a sister, and me.
We cultivated rare moments.
years of accumulated moments
life lessons learned in our garden
concealed respites for me
little breaks felt secure
sojourns in my childhood sanctuary
taught by parents I cherished
children flourish when cherished
mature and develop in unique moments
Today, I linger in a natural sanctuary
planting flowers in my garden
knowing I am secure
beneath shade of ginkgo tree.
decades have passed for me
Yet, when my favorite cherished
Daisies bloom in summertime, I feel secure
knowing that the rapid moments
pass silently in my garden
faithful cultivation of my sanctuary
As for me, I treasure the moments
I have cherished my labors in life’s garden
secure in my sacred sanctuary
