Day 9 – Topics:
Deep Breathing – Fiber Studio – Servant Leaders
Day 9 of the 21-day challenge.
I share 3 blessings each day from my rural life and experiences in western Pennsylvania.
Blessing 1: Deep Breathing
When it seems like you have more to do and no time to do it – take a break and take a rest.
Sit down or stand, and do a few deep breathing exercises.
You will be amazed at the benefit you will get if you make this a habit to do every day.
With the mouth closed: Inhale for the count of 4.
Hold it as you count to 7.
Finally, with open mouth, exhale to the count of 5 or more.
Repeat this 10 times.
__
I do these deep breathing exercises several times a day. It is particularly helpful to do as you lay in bed at night, and when you wake up in the morning.
This is one habit that I have recently learned as I read the book, Ten Habits to Wellness.

Blessing 2: Fiber Studio
My Fiber Studio is in the upstairs of my home. It has a bay window that faces South East, so the light flows into this room till late afternoon. It’s perfect for a studio, where the atmosphere is pleasant and I can work for hours in peacefulness and solitude. Art is a solitary business, requiring set-apart time away from all other concerns.
A 37-piece collection of my fiber art was recently in a solo exhibition from August 18 to October 30.
Putting the show together left my studio in distress.
Therefore, I’ve spent the past 2 days organizing it and making changes. I even washed down the walls as I was putting it all back together. Once completed yesterday afternoon, I sat in my comfortable chair and listened to a book by Parker Palmer on my Bose Sound System.
Pure JOY, to SIT in a clean, well-ordered studio again. Soon, I will be back up there working on a new series of artworks.
Blessing 3: Servant Leaders
I learned so much as a tenured professor of fine arts and humanities at Geneva College. It was remarkable that I was chosen for the opportunity to learn about what it means to have a Christian world view and to live out my faith in God in the classrooms of all my years of teaching at Geneva College. The reason I say it is remarkable is that I have a totally secular academic background.
The entire world of education greatlly expanded for me, as I learned to teach in new and exciting ways, I learned about FREEDOM. The freedom to learn, speak, and practice my faith in God, the Creator of all that exists in Heaven and Earth. I developed a weekly tradition observing Sunday as a Sacred Day of Rest. It is miraculous how God opened this door for me to step into a place where God is honored and students learn how to live out their lives from a perspective of being a servant leader. I saw positive leadership practiced from the administrators, to the professors, to the grounds workers and janitors. Everyone was living out the gospel of being a “servant leader,” in what we do.
I am resting today. Resting is one of the 10 Habits to Wellness as well.

Final Word:
I’m looking forward to sitting in the comfortable chair in my fiber studio this afternoon, and listening to another book by Parker Palmer.
