The Poem: Blue Velvet Chair
Blue Velvet Chair
wintertime together
our house feels quiet
soothing like soft, silky velvet
a distinctively easy-going atmosphere
we view the shifting seasons
from the library window.
white dog with brindle spots
observes mirror reflection
on snow-covered sidewalk
Mom’s arms rest on a soft dense pile
Wears her summer-pink seersucker blouse
her fragile feet crossed in front
of curvy polished walnut legs
Esther’s silver cane balanced her steps
when dementia altered her life.
For decades we have taken it easy
in a velvety sky-blue chair
watching sunsets painted in the sky
in a distant mid-July evening
my father posed for photos
held his curly dark-haired baby
his great-granddaughter . Nicole
for the first time in our special chair
I stop to touch my aging dog
curled in the short, dense pile where
our cats secretly scratch the velvety fabric
revealing cotton stuffing on the wings
of our blue velvet chair.
