Every Day is a Holiday
every day is a holiday
I’m on vacation at home
look around – you will see me
painting postcards in my studio
splashing yellow-green brush strokes
pictures made with prayers of gratitude
my imagination in flight
living verticality every day
today is the best day
sans clock, sans phone, sans timeline

My Inspiration for this poem
During my years of teaching at Geneva College,
I had the joy of taking students to a number of European countries every summer.
There, I heard the words, “We are on holiday.”
I loved their idea of a holiday, where they went to quiet places and rested and enjoyed the mountains or the rivers, and all of nature. It is quite the opposite of what we Americans do when we are on vacation. I like the European concept of a holiday much better than the sizzling hustle and frantic bustle of a vacation on crowded and noisy beaches, and hopping from one place to another to see how many things we can see and do in a day. We do the opposite of what the Europeans do, and we pay a price for our lack of respect for our bodies that need rest and a concentration of wellness instead of business. My poem indicates how I feel about the idea of being on a holiday.
