Clarity – My “One Word” for 2021
February 21-27, 2021
FAVORITE BOOKS on the shelves in my studio.
I love the art of every time period and there is something about each time period that inspires me.
I’d have a hard time just pinpointing ONE ART PERIOD that I like best. To be honest, I like them ALL.
BOOKS with PICTURES are best, aren’t they!.
This week we look at some Art Books on the shelves in my studio.
I share my thoughts about Art History and how we are INSPIRED by ART.
Did you know?
- Students who pursue a BFA (Bachelor of Fine Arts) Degree at a university or fine arts school, are required to take quite a lot of Art History courses AND studio art courses in a variety of different areas in art
- A student will focus on the genre of choice, but will also take courses in a number of other areas at the same time.
- During the years when I was a painting major. I also had extensive training in Printmaking, Drawing, Ceramics, and Fiber Arts. Plus, I took every Art History course the university offered.
- In addition, the BFA student takes a full set of courses in math, sciences, and social sciences.
Fine Art Background…did you know?
- The art student studies different periods of time in human history. It is required.
- The HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT of art brings understanding of our own time period.
- Art MIRRORS the spirit of the time and people.
- The ART that is left behind by a people group is the CULTURE.
- Culture is the artifacts, NOT the individuals.
- Culture (Art Objects) reveal the heart of the people who made it.
Lets have a look at various periods of art from pre-history to the present – Visit here.
As you are looking over the history of the world through the visual representations, you will probably find some that you like a lot. I have to say, I like them all. Each is unique, and each represents the thoughts and beliefs of the people who made the artworks. You might think about what you would want to make if you were going to create art.
What period of art looks interesting to you?
What do you like most about the art works you see in this section?
What art inspires you?
What would you like to MAKE?
1_ Miro’ and deKooning are on my FAV LIST.
I look for the underlying skills in drawing in all forms of art. If an artist has not had a lot of figure drawing courses in their studies, it is apparent.
Drawing is the core of all art forms. You need a good background in DRAWING to make great ART.
Drawing is the scaffolding on which a work of art is held together. For this reason, I love the abstract paintings and drawings of Joan Miro’ and Willem deKooning.
I have always loved the energetic and playful work of Spanish artist, Joan Miro’ and I have a number of books with photos of his paintings on my studio shelves. Drawing is the backbone of all art forms. Drawing is the essential element in this art work.
What art works would you like to see in person at an art exhibition?

Did you notice the very colorful little sculpture on the book shelf in my photo? I found this delightful little sculpture in Prague, Czech Republic one summer. I was walking down the steep hill from the Prague Castle, towards the Old Town, and I saw an art gallery. I would never pass up an opportunity to go into an art gallery! There, I saw this precious sculpture. I was with my daughter, Salome’ that summer in Prague. We both bought a lot of art in galleries and from the street vendors. The one thing I cam home from Europe with each summer, was a suitcase full of art and books about art.
There are a couple of walls in my studio where I have book shelves. In one area the books are all poetry or books about writing poetry. Poetry is my favorite genre in writing and reading. When you are studying over the many years for your degrees, you will read a very wide array of work in all genres. But as you mature, you will begin to focus on the are that you find your passion to be in. For me, it is poetry and thoughtful personal essays that I like best. This is my specialization in literature. In addition to the degrees in fine art studio, I also earned a MA in English – specializing in poetry.
Rita came to Austria to study with me in the summer of 1998. At that time she was working on her BFA degree in Painting. We became good friends and we both were members of Christians in the Visual Arts (CIVA). You can see more about Christians in the Visual Arts on Face Book Here.
I visited Rita in Toronto one year. She and her son, Peter, took me to dine one evening at a vegan restaurant owned by Buddhist monks. Peter had ordered a dish of everything on the menu for us – it was an incredible meal unlike any other experience I ever had. We enjoyed the many different foods and the conversation was so delightful with Rita and Peter.
Below, I’ve selected a couple of quotes that were on the gallery wall with an exhibition of Rita’s paintings. Rita was inspired by reading the Bible and her paintings reflect the awe and grandeur of those visualizations from scriptures.
There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under heaven…
I will exalt you, O Lord, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not
let my enemies gloat over me.
This is just a little overview of some of the books I cherish – in Art and Poetry.
