_My Thoughts
When You Come to a Roadblock:
Slow Down and Stop. Look UP!
One thing is certain.
Changes will come into your life, over and over again.
Circumstances and roadblocks will often be unexpected over the decades of our life.
As I sit here at my computer this morning, I am looking back on over 8 decades of my own life journey. From this vantage point, I can see the shifts, starts, stops, leaps forward, falls backwards, and how they all flow from one change to the next,, like being on the Merry-Go-Round of Life.
Do you have days or even seasons when it feels like you have stepped onto a carousel that begins to whirl in circles, speeding along, and you are feeling dizzy with no place to get off of this merry-go-round?
Changes happen without warning as we try to hold on and balance ourselves as our circumstances change as we turn the pages of the calendar of a lifetime.
Some changes will be welcome and you will embrace them. Some will be changes you might never have wanted and really won’t want to embrace them and invite them inside for a visit. You have no choice in the matter. It is guaranteed that you will have surprises that are not what you want, as they are a part of our life. Some of the unfortunate event will be life-altering.
Sight loss is Life-Altering!
I experienced sudden blindness in October 2007. It arrived one morning unexpectedly and stopped my daily life of activities in a moment. I did not know if it was day or night, could not see a clock, dial a phone, or do anything else – instantly.
I was confused, and uncertain what my next step would be.
This blog Walking by Inner Vision, was one of the ways I decided that I could communicate, after intense training in personal adjustment to blindness. I did not know how to create or write a blog, but I decided I could do it, and two years after sight loss, I wrote my first blog post on Walking by Inner Vision. Because I truly was, walking by Inner Vision, every moment of every day. This blog is my celebration of LIFE After Sight loss.
My first step in recovering my artist-self,
I signed up for a pottery class at Sweetwater Art Center, in Sewickley, PA. Visit Here!
With the help of a friend who took me to the classes, I began to blossom. I spent the next 8 years making pottery at Sweetwater. Clay was my companion during those years, as I crafted beautiful works of art from clay with my muddy hands.
During those first years, I had two solo exhibitions at the Merrick Art Gallery: 2011 and 2014.
Since I lost my sight in October 2007, that meant that by my fourth year of blindness, I was back to my normal artist life of exhibiting my work. And, three years aftter the first one, I had another one-person exhibition at the same gallery. I was determined that sight loss would not take me down!

To my surprise, Channel 21 Youngstown, Ohio, WFMJ TV did a short feature on the changes that came to my life when in a few days’ time, I was plunged into a world of sight loss. As a visual artist, it would be the most dreaded situation. In this video I discuss the major change that I had made, three years before, and and how I have continued to be an artist despite the loss of sight.
Recently, two pieces of my pottery were juried into an exhibition in Pittsburgh. The show is _
Somatosensory 2026. Relating to the Senses.
See MORE about this exhibition Here!
This show is open from November 6 to November 27 at LAMP CLP .
(Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh.
This show is co-sponsored by Pittsburgh’s Society of Sculptors.
The biggest difference in my life now is that I was forced to slow down and stop for a while.
It was like coming suddenly upon a stop sign along the road. You have to stop immediately and just sit there for a while until the light changes and you can then proceed on with your journey. For a person like me who lived an intense life of teaching, lecturing, traveling, writing, and making art it was a sudden jolt.
The thing that caused the loss is not so important. What is important is what we do after the change happens to us.
I am still learning life lessons during the day. Instead of continuing on at the frantic pace I had lived as a professor I find that now I have slowed down and have time to really appreciate my life so much more.
BONUS: A Poem for You!

_Scripture
I will be reading the Psalms for the next two months on this journey to the end of 2026.
For the next week’s post, I will write about Psalm 1. Perhaps you would like to join me on this adventure as we come to the final 2 months of the year? If so, Read Psalm 1 this weeek, and next Sunday, I’ll talk more about it with you.
_Daily Action Plan
1_Write a short essay, short story, or a poem, about your own circumstances and your journey to find God’s path for your life journey. God has called us to live our life as He has planned for us. We are not on a carousel, and we are not adrift in confusion. God has given us a path to life and each day we can begin again, for each day is new.
- Read the Psalm #1, to stay in touch with God’s plan for you. I choose the quiet morning hours when it is still dark outside to read, pray, and meditate on God’s Word and his goodness in my daily life challenges, changes, or roadblocks.

How I Found HOPEFULNESS in Unexpected Changes:
I discovered a new life after sudden sight loss. For the next two years, I learned to see the world and my place in it in an entirely new way. I completed training for Personal Adjustment to Blindness, It took two years of training and lots of challenging work to learn to read and write using adaptive technologies for the blind. Ad the months went by, God was showing me that my creative life would continue,, but in some new ways.
I began to write Divinely inspired life lessons
New experiences and God-directed Opportunities
New DISCOVERIES to share with the world
