What writer inspired me?<\/i><\/b><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I taught\u00a0 a wide assortment of \u00a0humanities \u00a0courses throughout my teaching career;\u00a0\u00a0it is difficult to choose.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
I have to consider which writers brought me to recognize \u00a0the core values I have embraced for my entire lifetime.<\/div>\n
What works \u00a0answered the questions of life and death?<\/div>\n
Which ones gave me a world view that goes beyond current \u00a0trends and fashions?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
How did I begin to understand the Zeitgeist of the times through the different authors and texts?<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
During my undergraduate studies, contemporary American poet Robert Bly deeply influenced me.<\/div>\n
At the same time, I was exuberant when I read the\u00a0\u00a0language of the 16th century poets and wrote papers on romance and death I viewed \u00a0through the poetry \u00a0of the \u00a0English author, John Donne.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
If I look back into my high school days I find it was\u00a0the “Beat” poets who occupied\u00a0my literary \u00a0thoughts.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
In my earliest recollections, I listen once again to \u00a0Joyce Kilmer’s poem “Trees” ~ All school children had to memorize this poem and recite it \u00a0before the class. \u00a0I probably complained, but that poem remains, planted deeply in my own mind.<\/div>\n

Authors and books stay with us forever. In the final quarter of my life, they are still here, alive and thrilling. My memories abound with the people, places, and life lessons I discovered from all those writers and poets.<\/div>\n

After quite a bit of contemplative musing over this question, I suddenly \u00a0knew for sure exactly which writer and works were\u00a0the\u00a0\u00a0center of my creative life.<\/div>\n
My source is an ancient one \u2013 the Psalms of the Bible. \u00a0I would have heard them read in church from the time before I could speak. The various Psalms have been at the core of my life.<\/div>\n

I focused on\u00a0some of the Psalms;\u00a0wrote a number of my own personal \u201cMeditations on the Psalms.”<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n

,”Drawing and Writing from the Psalms”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
is an \u00a0introduction to the imagery and lyrical majesty found in the Psalms. I created this workshop, a course in learning how to get inspiration for your writing by using the Psalms.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u00a0In our workshop, students \u00a0read a Psalm, meditated on the text,\u00a0then wrote responses to where this text led them in their own writing projects. \u00a0We also used the imagery of the Psalms to create drawings and paintings.<\/div>\n

How can I use the Psalms to lead me into some creative writing?<\/strong><\/em><\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
1._ Begin by reading one Psalm (or passage \u00a0of your choice).<\/div>\n
2._ Jot down notes\u00a0on that Psalm as you read it.<\/div>\n
3._ Continue to think about the images and language of this Psalm after you read it.<\/div>\n
4._ You may need to read it several times to get the feel of it.<\/div>\n
5._ Use your notes to create your own Psalm.<\/div>\n
