On languid September days<\/span><\/p>\n

I would like to wear<\/span><\/p>\n

colorful gaudy jewelry<\/span><\/p>\n

every single one<\/span><\/p>\n

at the same time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Adornments are worn to enhance autumn days.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’d put the gems on in layers,<\/span><\/p>\n

an ancient warrior preparing for battle.<\/span><\/p>\n

Blue Topaz rings, one on each finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

My arms encircled with ornaments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protected by brilliant stones-<\/span><\/p>\n

faceted cherry quartz, deep green turquoise chunks,<\/span><\/p>\n

nuggets of Baltic amber in different colors,<\/span><\/p>\n

jet black polished stones, and waxy yellow opals.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I’ll wear a periwinkle blue dancing skirt<\/span><\/p>\n

a flowing chiffon jacket.<\/span><\/p>\n

I am a flamboyant coat-of-armor<\/span><\/p>\n

that covers voluptuous, full breasts<\/span><\/p>\n

like a bishop’s gold-encrusted shawl.<\/span><\/p>\n

My holy, rare, mother-of-pearl talisman<\/span><\/p>\n

Adorns my royal, goddess chest.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I slip my perfumed feet into soft sky blue sandals,<\/span><\/p>\n

promenade around the spacious room,<\/span><\/p>\n

in ever-widening circles,<\/span><\/p>\n

among the evening shadows,<\/span><\/p>\n

under luminescent spheres<\/span><\/p>\n

turning high above us.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>The Backstory<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

The theme of dance, music, and dreaming runs through many of my poems. I am captivated by dance performances and the body’s movement through space and time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Often the theme for a poem begins with a quote or something I heard that lingers inside me for years. This is the case with this poem, “Adornment.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I visited an art exhibition many years ago with a dear friend. Rosella Childs was a metalsmith and painter. She created stunning jewelry. One day Rosella remarked, <\/span><\/p>\n

“I’d like to wear all of my jewelry at the same time. I just want to put it all on, layer the bracelets up and down my arms, and wear all my necklaces at the same time.”<\/span><\/p>\n

I could understand this deep passion for adornment, for I feel the same way. I think of my friend, Rosella, often when I am selecting the jewelry I will be wearing as I get dressed for special occasions. There is always an overwhelming sense of urgency to put it all on. All of it. In this poem, I am daydreaming about what it might feel like.<\/span><\/p>\n
