Let&#8217;s write a &#8220;Zip Code Poem.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Anyone can do this!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This project is called <strong>The Zip Code Poem.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are your options &#8211; Choose one:<\/p>\n<p>_Use the zip code of a place where you live.<\/p>\n<p>_use a place you would like to live.<\/p>\n<p>_use a place you want to visit.<\/p>\n<p>_Use a place you have visited in the past.<\/p>\n<p>Note: If the zip code has a zero in it, you can leave a blank line.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to represent the &#8220;zero&#8221; in a zip code could be to repeat the line above the &#8220;zero.&#8221; \u00a0Be creative and you may even think of another way you want to show the &#8220;zero&#8221; in your poem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>My example is below:<\/p>\n<p>I live 2 miles away from\u00a0 a small rural city &#8211; Ellwood City, PA 16117<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/Blog15_WBIV_May8_ZipCodePoem_PHOTO.jpg?resize=409%2C341\" alt=\"\" width=\"409\" height=\"341\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I grew up here and have spent most of my life near\u00a0 Ellwood City, in a small village called Wurtemburg. Our post office zip code is the same as Ellwood City.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My ancestors settled in Pennsylvania in 1730.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ellwood City was the number one producer of stainless steel in America..<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">My father, William (Bill) McKinney,\u00a0 was a steelworker in\u00a0 our\u00a0 western Pennsylvania rural city. I dedicate this poem to my father, and all the men who labored to produce steel\u00a0 for the entire world.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>How I wrote this poem:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">First, I focused on those \u00a0steel town images that knew intimately as a child \u00a0and as I see them every day. \u00a0By the early 1980s this state was devastated by the closing of almost every steel mill &#8211; every city and town along the many rivers is a landscape of abandoned steel mills.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>I used the syllable count for the zip code numbers: 1 6 1 1 7<\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I focused on 4 words to signify the history of the steel mills in western Pennsylvania.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">steel, mills, steal, still<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">I chose to CENTER my lines&#8230;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">_I wrote a Zip Code Poem about<\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\">Ellwood City, PA 16117<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">***<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">&#8220;steel&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">by Lynda McKinney Lambert<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">steel<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">abandoned rusting mills<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">stand<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">still<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">stainless \u00a0bargain priced cold steal<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">__<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/blog15_WBIV_May8_ZipCodePoem_PHOTOMills.jpg?resize=426%2C295\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"295\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Lynda McKinney Lambert.
