My LOVE \u00a0 of POETRY \u00a0 developed during my undergraduate studies at <\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

\u00a0While working on the BFA degree in painting,\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was also taking courses in English and other\u00a0 disciplines <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

designated as “Intensive Writing” courses.\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

I was\u00a0 dedicated to working across disciplines <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

in Fine Art and English Literature.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Ten Favorite Poets on my Shelves<\/h3>\n

Lynda’s shelves are lined with her favorite poetry books.<\/p><\/div>\n

#1\u00a0Ranier Maria Rilke\u00a0 <\/a>\u00a0 Widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets, Rainer Maria Rilke was unique in his efforts to expand the realm of poetry through new uses of language.\u00a0 My work has been\u00a0 compared to Rilke on many occasions.<\/p>\n

#2 – Robert Bly\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a>Born in 1926.\u00a0\u00a0 American writer Robert Bly is regarded as \u201cone of the legends of contemporary poetry,\u201d according to David Biespel, \u201cthe prototypical non-modernist the one who set in motion a poetics of intensity for generations to come.\u201d I discovered Robert Bly around 1985, as a BFA major at Slippery Rock University of PA.\u00a0 I continued to do research and writing on his work for many years.<\/p>\n

#3 – William Carlos Williams \u00a0<\/a>was born the first of two sons of an English father and a Puerto Rican mother of French, Dutch, Spanish, and Jewish ancestry, and he grew up in Rutherford, New Jersey. He was a medical doctor, poet, novelist, essayist, and playwright.\u00a0 I focused on his poetry as \u00a0I worked on my\u00a0 MA in English and my MFA in Painting.\u00a0 I researched and wrote about his work in my thesis \u00a0projects for both degrees.<\/p>\n

William Carlos Williams an all-time favorite of mine.<\/p><\/div>\n

 <\/p>\n

#4 – <\/strong>\u00a0 Louise Gluck<\/a><\/em>\u00a0 was born in New York City in 1943 and grew up on Long Island.\u00a0 In 2020 she was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature “for her unmistakable poetic voice that with austere beauty makes individual existence universal.” Her poetry books are favorites of mine. We were both born in 1943 – a good year to be born.<\/p>\n

#5 –\u00a0Elizabeth Bishop\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a> (1911 – 1975)\u00a0\u00a0 She was born in 1911 in Worcester, Massachusetts and grew up there and in Nova Scotia. Her father died before she was a year old and her mother suffered seriously from mental illness; she was committed to an institution when Bishop was five. She has been a favorite of mine for many years. Her poems are memorable.<\/p>\n

#6 –\u00a0 Robinson Jeffers –\u00a0 Love Letters<\/a><\/p>\n

John Robinson Jeffers<\/b>\u00a0(January 10, 1887 \u2013 January 20, 1962) was an American poet, known for his work about the central California coast. Much of\u00a0Jeffers’s<\/b>\u00a0poetry was written in narrative and epic form. However, he is also known for his shorter verse and is considered an icon of the environmental movement.<\/span><\/p>\n

#7 – Yusef Komunyakaa\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n

Read his poem, : \u00a0Facing it \u00a0<\/a>He is a favorite poet that I taught in my African-American Poetry Course at Geneva College.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

#8 – Charles Wright\u00a0 <\/a>, (born August 25, 1935, Pickwick Dam, Tennessee, U.S.), American poet known for his lyricism and use of lush imagery in his poems about nature, life and death, and God.\u00a0Wright<\/b>\u00a0attended Davidson College (B.A., 1957) in North Carolina, where he studied history.<\/span><\/p>\n

#9 – Louise Erdrich\u00a0\u00a0 <\/a>was born in Little Falls, Minnesota in 1954. As the daughter of a Chippewa Indian mother and a German-American father, Erdrich explores Native-American themes in her works, with major characters representing both sides of her heritage. In an award-winning series of related novels and short stories, I think she is the best American \u00a0writer living today. She weaves stories in the most unique way\u00a0 so that they are living and breathing with life that is dynamic and unexpected.<\/p>\n

#10 –\u00a0 Barbara Crooker \u00a0 <\/a>Les Fauves<\/em>, by Barbara Crooker. \u00a0Read my review here. <\/a><\/p>\n

She was born in Cold Spring, New York, in 1945, and currently resides in Fogelsville, Pennsylvania. She began writing poetry in the late 1970s. Her poetry, for which she has won many awards, incorporates themes of nature, home, family, love, loss, and disability.<\/span><\/p>\n

And, how could I forget Walt Whitman?<\/h3>\n

Favorite Anthologies<\/h3>\n

Lynda \u00a0received a\u00a0 “Special Mention for a Body of Work, for six of her poems\u00a0 that will be featured as a group in the new 2020 anthology that comes out in April 2021.<\/p>\n
