a reflection on the <\/span><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Candle of Hope.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.\u00a0 Each Sunday during Advent, Christians all over the world will light a candle that will reflect one aspect of the miraculous events that lead up to the birth of Jesus.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The poem, &#8220;When My Daughter Cuts the Roses,&#8221; marks the beginning of Advent in our home. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The bouquet on my dining room table reminds me that now is the Season of Hope. As I listen to the latest news from around the world, it feels like people everywhere are \u00a0longing for the hope that is signified by the lighting of the first Advent candle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>The first week of Advent is a reminder to<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong> keep our thoughts and eyes focused on HOPE.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/hope-part-1\/\">Read Part 1 &#8211; Click Here!<\/a><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Why do we light that first candle?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I find that there is great beauty in the spiritual symbols of the weekly lighting of the Advent candles. Sometimes, it is unusual when we think of a child teaching a parent a lesson of some sort. But, here in my poem, my daughter teaches me a lesson in a unique way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em>\u00a0<span style=\"color: #000080;\">&#8220;When my Daughter Cut the Roses&#8221;<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><em>by Lynda McKinney Lambert (2014)<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">My daughter looked<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At the bouquet of fresh roses<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">noticed two of them were drooping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;Let me show you how to trim the roses<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">so they stay fresh and strong.&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Her hands held the roses firmly<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">one-by-one, trimmed off extra leaves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;These will make the water stink,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She found scissors in the drawer<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">put the roses in a bowl of tepid water<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">held each stem underwater<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sliced them all, diagonally &#8211;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;As I cut the rose under the water,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">little bubbles of air come to the surface.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, when the rose inhales<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it will only breathe water into it,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">it won&#8217;t fill up with air.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The living water inside the stems<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">gives longer life to each rose.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She carried the freshened flowers<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the tall glass vase<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">back to the center of the dining room table<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">darkest crimson buds, sunny yellow petals,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">deep green fern leaves<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and a frilly white carnation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>(The End)<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lynda McKinney Lambert.
