<\/a><\/p>\nOn the first Sunday of Advent<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\nthe priest lights one of the white candles <\/span><\/h2>\nin the ring of aromatic pine.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/a><\/p>\n\u00a0“This first candle stands for hope,”<\/span> he says. <\/em><\/h1>\n <\/p>\n
Part 2 – a reflection on the <\/span><\/h2>\nCandle of Hope.<\/span><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n
Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas.\u00a0 Each Sunday during Advent, Christians all over the world will light a candle that will reflect one aspect of the miraculous events that lead up to the birth of Jesus.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The poem, “When My Daughter Cuts the Roses,” marks the beginning of Advent in our home. <\/span><\/p>\nThe bouquet on my dining room table reminds me that now is the Season of Hope. As I listen to the latest news from around the world, it feels like people everywhere are \u00a0longing for the hope that is signified by the lighting of the first Advent candle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nThe first week of Advent is a reminder to<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n keep our thoughts and eyes focused on HOPE.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\nRead Part 1 – Click Here!<\/a><\/h3>\nWhy do we light that first candle?<\/span><\/p>\nI find that there is great beauty in the spiritual symbols of the weekly lighting of the Advent candles. Let’s pause to embrace the message of the Candle of Hope.\u00a0 Jesus is the rose, and he is the coming of Light into the entire world.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/p>\n<\/h3>\nIn a poem, I consider the pleasure of a visit<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n with our daughter, Ilsa.<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\nBelow you will read a poem about her visit at our home at Christmas in 2014 and something we did together. Sometimes, it is unusual when we think of a child teaching a parent a lesson of some sort. But, here in my poem, my daughter teaches me a lesson in a unique way.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n
\u00a0“When my Daughter Cut the Roses”<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\nby Lynda McKinney Lambert (2014)<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nMy daughter looked<\/span><\/p>\nAt the bouquet of fresh roses<\/span><\/p>\nnoticed two of them were drooping.<\/span><\/p>\n“Let me show you how to trim the roses<\/span><\/p>\nso they stay fresh and strong.” she said.<\/span><\/p>\nHer hands held the roses firmly<\/span><\/p>\none-by-one, trimmed off extra leaves<\/span><\/p>\n“These will make the water stink,” she said.<\/span><\/p>\nShe found scissors in the drawer<\/span><\/p>\nput the roses in a bowl of tepid water<\/span><\/p>\nheld each stem underwater<\/span><\/p>\nsliced them all, diagonally –<\/span><\/p>\n“As I cut the rose under the water,<\/span><\/p>\nlittle bubbles of air come to the surface.<\/span><\/p>\nNow, when the rose inhales<\/span><\/p>\nit will only breathe water into it,<\/span><\/p>\nit won’t fill up with air.<\/span><\/p>\nThe living water inside the stems<\/span><\/p>\ngives longer life to each rose.”<\/span><\/p>\nShe carried the freshened flowers<\/span><\/p>\nIn the tall glass vase<\/span><\/p>\nback to the center of the dining room table<\/span><\/p>\ndarkest crimson buds, sunny yellow petals,<\/span><\/p>\ndeep green fern leaves<\/span><\/p>\nand a frilly white carnation.<\/span><\/p>\n\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n(The End)<\/p>\n
