would love to hear about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Do you want to learn about the Japanese tanka?<\/h3>\n<p>I never wrote a TANKA poem until\u00a0 April 2015 when I decided to find out what a TANKA is and to write one.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>TANKA dates back about 1200 years in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>I had to dig into some research on the Japanese Poetry Form.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>What is a TANKA poem?\u00a0 <\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<h4>_originated in Japan.<\/h4>\n<h4>_ Themes are nature, seasons, romance, sadness, love, strong human emotions.<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_ no \u00a0titles and\u00a0 not numbered!<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<p>_should not read like a sentence<\/p>\n<h4>_writer uses personification, metaphor, and other allusions<\/h4>\n<h4>_lyrical intensity gives a sense of a personal and intimate world<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_ no\u00a0 capitalization or punctuation<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n<h4>_Fragmentation\u00a0 is highly desirable<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>What does TANKA look like?<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<h4>_5 lines.<\/h4>\n<h4>_syllable count. is \u00a05,7,5,7, 7<\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><strong>What else do I need to know to write a TANKA poem?<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3>The 5 lines will be like this:<\/h3>\n<h4><em><strong>_Line 1:<\/strong><\/em> 5 \u00a0syllables \u2013 Line 1 is one or two \u00a0concrete personal images. Keep it simple and write from personal experiences.<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_Line 2:<\/strong><\/em> 7 syllables \u2013 Line\u00a0 2, write a reflection on how you felt or what you were doing or thinking about in the first line\u2019s experiences.<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_Line 3:<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0 5 \u00a0syllables \u2013 Line 3 describes thoughts or feelings \u00a0\u00a0This is the PIVOT LINE of the poem! It refers back to lines 1 and 2; and ahead to lines 4 and 5.\u00a0 You may have to switch and move lines around to get this working in the poem\u2019s \u00a0format.<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_ Line 4:<\/strong><\/em> 7 syllables that combine all five lines of the poem\u2019s images and ideas<\/h4>\n<h4><em><strong>_Line 5:<\/strong><\/em> \u00a07 syllables that continue to carry out your themes and imagery. \u00a0This last line is probably the most important line in the poem, and here is where you surprise your reader.<\/h4>\n<\/div>\n<p>_ IMPORTANT:\u00a0 Lines 4 and 5 must show a REFLECTION but not repeat the first 2 lines of the poem<\/p>\n<p>Remember this: You are NOT WRITING A SENTENCE!<\/p>\n<p>Serious reflection is established \u00a0with your last 2 lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content clearfix\">\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>Here is a Tanka poem I wrote in April 2015. It&#8217;s my FIRST tanka!<\/p>\n<p>I walked \u00a0outside in the early morning with my dog.<\/p>\n<p>Rain dampened the earth\u00a0 before we departed on our walk. As we walked through the soft gray mists, rain once again started falling down on us.
