{"id":4757,"date":"2019-04-09T05:33:22","date_gmt":"2019-04-09T09:33:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/?p=4757"},"modified":"2019-04-09T11:54:32","modified_gmt":"2019-04-09T15:54:32","slug":"a-memory-within-a-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/a-memory-within-a-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"A Memory Within a Memory"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Post #242<\/p>\n<p>April 9, 2019<\/p>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>April is National Poetry Month<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<h1 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>Day 9: <\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>\u201c A Memory Within a Memory&#8221;<\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">AKA &#8220;Even in Arcadia&#8221;<\/h3>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">The story behind the poem&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>I wrote this poem in 1988 while working on my BFA degree in Painting.\u00a0 I began to write poems during my four-years of studies at Slippery Rock University of PA.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I did not try to get any of them published while I was there for I was busy doing my paintings and fiber art works. But, I kept on writing poems and essays and most of them were inspired by Art History.<\/p>\n<p>From 1989 to 1991, I was doing graduate work for the MFA degree in painting at West Virginia University.\u00a0 But what is unusual about all of this, is the fact that at the same time, I was working on the MA degree in English at Slippery Rock University &#8211; simultaneously.<\/p>\n<p>My plan to go on for the MFA at West Virginia University was the goal from the beginning. But along the way I fell in love with English and in particular, poetry.\u00a0 This led me to pursue both degrees over the next six years &#8211; in 2 different states at 2 different universities.\u00a0 From this moment forward, I worked across disciplines for the rest of my academic career and still do, today.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Poetry became a focus during those years &#8211; <\/strong><\/h2>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>and I enjoyed the publications of my first poems in 1990.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Poetry and Painting are \u00a0my passions.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve worked across disciplines my entire career.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Memory&#8221; is \u00a0an enduring theme in all of my art works and writings.<\/p>\n<p>when I wrote my MFA Thesis, I included this poem in the \u00a0published thesis that I submitted to my graduate committee in May 1991.<\/p>\n<p>After some years of professional work, I returned to this poem when I compiled the material for my book,<\/p>\n<p>Concerti: Psalms for the Pilgrimage, Kota Press, 2002.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the poem became the structure on which\u00a0 I organized this book.<\/p>\n<p>I broke the poem up into sections, and each of the sections became the title for a section in the book.<\/p>\n<p>this poem is the backbone and support for the entire book.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A Memory Within a Memory&#8221; is also known as &#8220;Even in Arcadia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Memory Within a Memory<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The unfolding<\/p>\n<p>of a story-<\/p>\n<p>marks<\/p>\n<p>gouged in sand and stone<\/p>\n<p>washed up on barren beaches<\/p>\n<p>reaching upward<\/p>\n<p>across time<\/p>\n<p>and scattered<\/p>\n<p>among<\/p>\n<p>rumors.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;<a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Lynda_1996_Self_Portraitwith3Grace_s.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"4762\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/a-memory-within-a-memory\/lynda_1996_self_portraitwith3grace_s\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Lynda_1996_Self_Portraitwith3Grace_s.jpg?fit=6114%2C4810&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"6114,4810\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;1358936452&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;1&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Lynda_1996_Self_Portraitwith3Grace_s\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;Picture of Lynda McKinney Lambert, American Author and Artist.
