{"id":437,"date":"2014-10-26T09:44:53","date_gmt":"2014-10-26T14:44:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lyndalambert.com\/?p=437"},"modified":"2014-10-26T10:20:06","modified_gmt":"2014-10-26T15:20:06","slug":"shelter-from-the-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/shelter-from-the-wind\/","title":{"rendered":"Shelter From the Wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Bob and I were on our way to Silicone Valley where I would begin \u00a0a new job after completing my MFA degree at West Virginia University. \u00a0As Bob drove our Nissan 300 ZX car, I had my yellow pad out; I jotted down notes on that pad \u00a0the entire trip.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>We traveled across the country\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><strong>from Ellwood City (in western Pennsylvania) \u00a0to Cupertino, California.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>In the weeks that followed, I returned to my pages of notes from the trip. I turned them into poems. My notes from driving across NEVADA became the inspiration for \u00a0the images in this poem: &#8220;Shelter From the Wind.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This poem was published this week in<em><strong> &#8220;Magnets and Ladders Literary Magazine.&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> It had preciously been published in another literary magazine:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>YAWP Magazine for Literature and Arts<\/strong><\/em>,<br \/>\nSummer, 2001, #3 \u2013 Pittsburgh, PA<\/p>\n<p>***<\/p>\n<p><a <\/em>flashing lights and casinos<br \/>\ngrope together at the base of violet shrouded mountains<br \/>\nWalk in fields of fragrant sage and purple tumbleweed<br \/>\nStacked in fluffy clumps against fences, by the wind.<br \/>\nLook across this fertile plain of the valley.<br \/>\nWatch the long train moving east to an Oasis.<\/p>\n<p>Trees and grass, water aplenty in the Oasis.<br \/>\nA single gas pump, a shiny slot machine in this lonely casino.<br \/>\nBehind violet shadows on taupe-blue mountains.<br \/>\nReach down to touch the prickly tumbleweed<br \/>\nthat blooms before the winter winds<br \/>\nsweep through the Nevada Oasis valley.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Winter winds blow frigid in this valley<\/p>\n<p>bringing weighted clouds of ice to the Oasis.<\/p>\n<p>Winter storms howl and moan around the casinos,<\/p>\n<p>sweeping down across the barren mountains,<\/p>\n<p>removing purple from the tumbleweed<\/p>\n<p>and lifting it\u2019s hollow bones to the icy wind.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The casinos are a shelter from the wind.<br \/>\nTourists stay, trying to win in this frigid Nevada valley<br \/>\ndrawn here like thirsty men to an Oasis<br \/>\nseeking water and wealth from the casinos<br \/>\nwhen the wind blows sharp in the mountains.<br \/>\nThe only thing moving is the tumbleweed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Poem_PhotoNevadaTumbleweed.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Truckers never see the tumbleweed.<br \/>\nThey mark time like notches on a gun through driving Nevada winds<br \/>\nignoring the signs posted in the valley,<br \/>\ndesiring to reach warm arms in the Oasis<br \/>\nor painted lips and blinking lights in the casinos-<br \/>\ntrying to delay the next trip over the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Seasons change slowly in the Nevada mountains,<br \/>\nleaving behind memories like frail tumbleweed.<br \/>\nDreams pass as fragments in a winter-wind,<br \/>\nand tumbleweed blowing in the valley<br \/>\nas surely as a man travels, looking for an Oasis<br \/>\nand a sure bet in the Silver State casinos.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><a
