Today is January 26th.
I am happy to be writing this after being with Deon for several hours today. As you’ve read from brother Scott’s and Deon’s posts from earlier today, Deon’s health status remains fairly stable overall. Deon reports that there are some ups and some downs in his daily life. He also shares an awareness of some new areas of pain that he and Lynne are on top of, with the ever present guidance and support from their Hospice Team. He also shared that, as always, he is able to get out of bed and into his wheelchair, or from his chair to a standing position to take very few steps to sit on the couch, but as it has always been, any ‘transfer’ from one place to another, or one position to another, drains his energy rapidly. On the other hand, he also sees that his battery recharges fairly quickly, so he can soon shift or move again. He listens to his body. He keeps a prayer in his heart and mind frequently, asking for strength to get through each day. I’d say those prayers are answered, wouldn’t you?

Today I asked Deon if he would share some advice for anyone living with and/or battling cancer, as follows:

ONE

Keep your faith active through prayer. Remember that the Lord and your relationship with him is important and He is with you, always.
</sp><sp>

TWO

You are feeling lousy, just remember to tell yourself that you can change your attitude and the way your day goes in a split second. Push yourself through it, focus on something more positive that is outside yourself (as he said “get out of your head in moments like that.”). Excellent advice, wouldn’t you agree?
</sp><sp>

THREE

Remember that you are strong. You've survived tough times already. You have the skills and the inner and outer strength to get through this, whatever the outcome. Don't give up!

</sp><sp>

FOUR
</sp><sp>
Have hope. Deon feels this is as important as your faith, and perhaps goes hand in hand with it. Hope that this, too, shall pass. Hope that you will heal. Hope that you will endure any pain or suffering.

FIVE

Ask for help: from God, from your closest family member(s) and friends. From your professional caregivers (Hospice; your Dr., your Nurse, etc.).
</sp><sp>

SIX

Be humble with receiving help and support. It’s not easy to receive. We’re mostly used to being independent and able to do for ourselves, or we’re used to giving to others, not receiving! When we are unwell, we are less able, or unable, to help ourselves in all ways. Ask. Receive. Give Thanks. Repeat.
</sp><sp>

SEVEN

Remember: you’re never alone! (That one comes from our sister Theresa, as well.)
</sp><sp>
</sp><sp>

Final Note from Paula:
Deon and I talk, as we often do, of real life, serious matters. As I’ve shared before, we get philosophical, talk religion, faith, spirituality, what the meaning and purpose of our lives are, etc. I can say for certain that in Deon’s situation, as he moves mentally and physically toward the threshold between this world and the next, that he has a deeper appreciation and understanding of what is…and isn’t…important in this life. If only we could all get or have that understanding without having this difficult situation.

As Deon has taught me (us), we worry about things that truly do not matter in the grand scheme of things. We humans tend to worry about material gain, keeping up with your coworkers or your neighbors or friends. We worry about our weight, our hair, our clothes. We worry about things that are not that important, folks…but some of us just aren’t ready to ‘get that’ quite yet. And that’s okay. We’re exactly where we’re supposed to be. But don’t forget to open your eyes and your heart before it’s too late.

We love and appreciate you all and wish for you more steps, more moments toward a deeper awareness of how precious you are and this life is. Keep loving and giving to others and working on taking better care of ourselves. Please know how very much we appreciate what you continue to give to Deon and all of us in his family. We appreciate you so very much! Keep sending your wonderful messages of encouragement, your fun/funny stories about adjusting to Maine Winters, and so much more.
\Be well. Keep the faith, pray often and hold onto hope with all your heart! Blessings and Peace to everyone!

The Lyons Family

This article is brought to you by Lynda McKinney Lambert. January 27, 2019.

You can find more information on D.
