Fanfare & Ballyhoo – Here is where I Celebrate my Writing Life<\/p>\n

My poem, “K\u00f6enigsee” will appear in the Winter Issue of The Avocet.<\/em><\/p>\n

<\/strong>I wrote this poem from notes in my sketchbook one summer in Austria. I traveled from my village in Gr\u00f6dig, Austria to K\u00f6enigsee, Germany, in a ferry boat. That is how everyone arrives in K\u00f6enigsee, for there are no roads to this little Alpine village. We must cross the wide expanse of the lake that lies between the towering mountains. Even in the warmest months of summer, the mountains have snow-covered caps, and the lake is bitter cold.<\/p>\n

After an afternoon of enjoying the visit, I got on the last boat to go back to my village.

\n<\/sp>
\nNote: The German word, “K\u00f6nigsee,” means “Kings Lake.” in English.<\/p>\n

\n<\/sp>

\nSwift winds bring low temperatures
\nclouds conceal marble mountain peaks<\/p>\n

Chiffon grey skies
\npress down on clustered red-tiled roofs,
\nnarrow doorways
\nslow moving tourists
\nin K\u00f6enigsee.<\/p>\n

Long ferry boats
\nglide silently
\nacross the frigid green lake
\nlaughing Germans sing of home
\nwaves break beyond our boat.<\/p>\n

In the final hour of night
\nbefore mountains disappear
\nmy chilled body reaches downward
\nseeking shelter
\nin the next bus to Gr\u00f6dig.<\/p>\n
