Here’s the BACK STORY of my POEM!<\/h3>\n

I wanted to write a poem about my first early memory.<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

I had a number of fragments – images that kept floating through my thoughts for many years.<\/p>\n

From time to time – fleeting images – things I never understood.<\/p>\n

When I was about fifty years old, I asked my mother about some memories I had from the time when I was a baby in my crib.\u00a0 My Mother and my Aunt Jeanne lived together at that time because it was during the Second World War and my father and my Uncle Harry had been drafted in 1943. That was the year I was born – in August.<\/p>\n

My early memory took place during the 2 years the women lived together.<\/p>\n

“Minotaur”<\/em><\/h2>\n

 <\/p>\n

The dream always runs ahead of me<\/p>\n

In dreaded darkness. I lay quietly<\/p>\n

in warm blankets without spoken language.<\/p>\n

I have no understanding of speech<\/p>\n

I tremble with fear some nights – tears.<\/p>\n

I cannot capture words, or speak; my<\/p>\n

eyes are weaving indigo strands.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I unroll those threads – watch<\/p>\n

every night when searchers<\/p>\n

walk into the room. Their voices are<\/p>\n

soft whispers. I watch them. With the skein<\/p>\n

of thread in my hands, I am ready.<\/p>\n

Thread guides me on my journey<\/p>\n

back to a safe place inside this labyrinth.<\/p>\n

The only monster<\/p>\n

in this sacred space is fear –<\/p>\n

grips me when sirens begin to scream<\/p>\n

and windows are covered with a<\/p>\n

dark brown wool blanket. I remain silent<\/p>\n

and I watch.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Inside every labyrinth there is a hidden<\/p>\n

creative treasure at the center. Monsters<\/p>\n

often guard a treasure, and I am no exception<\/p>\n

because I watch and observe obscure details.<\/p>\n

I learned to go forth on a forbidden path<\/p>\n

through the forest and return to safety every night.<\/p>\n

This must all happen as it did, for me to find<\/p>\n

the center of me, where I am safe and where my treasures lie.<\/p>\n
