I do\u00a0 have a few copies available from me, but it&#8217;s not available on-line any longer.<\/p>\n<p>However,\u00a0 the introduction to Dad\u2019s\u00a0 role in my life is buried\u00a0 in the message that appears on the back cover of my first published book. This sets the tone for my life journey in ways that can only be discovered much later in life.<\/p>\n<p><em>Concerti: Psalms for the Pilgrimage,<\/em> features\u00a0 drawings and\u00a0 short journal passages I created during the summers when I took students to Austria for\u00a0 drawing and writing on a month-long travel\/study experience. My students lived in\u00a0 a village in Austria, where we studied in the local school from Monday through Thursday.\u00a0 On Thursday afternoons, we traveled to other countries each weekend.\u00a0 Italy, Czech Republic, and Germany..\u00a0 These weekend excursions\u00a0 provided my\u00a0 students with additional opportunities as we traveled and worked in our sketchbooks, on trains, busses, mountain tops, cathedrals, boats, festivals, and more.<\/p>\n<h4><em>Concerti: Psalms for the Pilgrimage\u00a0<\/em><\/h4>\n<p>was so special to me because it was literally written while traveling over several years.\u00a0 Throughout the book, readers will enjoy my drawings made on location.\u00a0 \u00a0One little bird appears through the entire book!\u00a0 As the pages are turned, here and there, the little drawing of a bird pops up in different locations.\u00a0 \u00a0Other drawings\u00a0 were made as I sat on a ledge in the mountain, viewed a cathedral, saw\u00a0 people on streets, and as I looked at ancient iron gates that lead into rose gardens and hidden restaurants..<\/p>\n<p>Yes!\u00a0 You can imagine that I was delighted when Kota&#8217; Press chose to publish my first book!<\/p>\n<h3>This Sunday\u00a0 is\u00a0 Father\u2019s Day.<\/h3>\n<p>When I was thinking about how I could write about my father, I remembered the\u00a0 endorsement\u00a0 that was written for the book\u2019s back cover. It is a good place for me to begin today, as I introduce you to my father, Bill McKinney. The beginnings of my life are intermingled with world events that changed the lives of everyone in 1943.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve written a number of essays and poems about my father.\u00a0 They have been published in additional books, and in literary magazines, and in a new anthology that was published recently by Stacy Russo and Julie Artman &#8211;\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Food-Flowers-Medicine-Other-Garden\/dp\/1737675951\/ref=sr_1_3?crid=3UYLK64ZE8KFB&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.7TycW-FQ1dXTYhDYywnAJjvWzwvYERp_dq2H79QaT8Dy8OfqYFbiZFwhLcAhslHX.spb1Bl4BZEPgIHsKU-Bx_Wc5grdgZFSwm2s_XA6uVuk&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=Julie+Artman&amp;qid=1781992352&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=julie+artman%2Cstripbooks%2C123&amp;sr=1-3\">Look here!<\/a><\/p>\n<p>But for today, I want to share what New York City artist and author, Howardena Pindell wrote for the back cover of my first book.\u00a0 This is a beautiful place for me to introduce my Dad to you.\u00a0 It reveals the beginning of our life journey together, in a unique way. I was born in August 1943, and the world was already deeply into a war in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Below is Howardena\u2019s message that is on the back cover of my first book.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote:<\/p>\n<p>I read Lynda Lambert\u2019s \u201cConcerti: Psalms for the Pilgrimage\u201d while on a three-day trip\u00a0 to Winston-Salem , North Carolina, from New York City and back during which I spent 24 hours traveling by train.\u00a0 \u00a0Reading and reflecting on her poems felt like a friendly fragrant\u00a0 embrace from decades past, reliving and renewing my own sense of personal history and visual, visceral memories.\u00a0 \u00a0I\u00a0 have always found hearing other memories to be profoundly healing as they make me feel less\u00a0 extremely alone\u00a0 and they illuminate my own\u00a0 reservoir\u00a0 of suffering and\u00a0 in contrast\u00a0 my capacity to feel joy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBook of Remembrance in Lidice\u201d brought to the surface unsettling images and emotions felt by me as a child during World War II.\u00a0 During my childhood in Philadelphia\u00a0 there were frequent citywide blackouts and food rationing.\u00a0 \u201cRemembrance in Lidice,\u201d brought back childish memories of feeling\u00a0 unprotected as my father was exiled to the Army for 3 years of war.<\/p>\n<p>I am grateful for Lynda Lambert\u2019s healing tapestry\u00a0 of words spun of sounds, images, and emotions.<\/p>\n<p>(End Quote)<\/p>\n<p>__<\/p>\n<p>Like Howardena, I did not have a father during the first two years of my life because he was drafted into the Army shortly after my birth.\u00a0 This will have so much to do with\u00a0 my life in ways I could\u00a0 not know for many years as an adult. Dad was a photo on the living room table that I kissed every night before going to bed.<\/p>\n<p>I have written a number of stories about Dad, and you can find them in my book, \u201cWalking by Inner Vision: Stories\u00a0 &amp; Poems. See it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Walking-Inner-Vision-Stories-Poems\/dp\/1543121624\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=3JDEESVCWTDYN&amp;dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.4Xz4Ll1x4DnabY-gVYflsQ.FFNt3yTkfpguPFzXcCs1dou3kg-DgMDkfteMYm4BjIk&amp;dib_tag=se&amp;keywords=Walking+by+Inner+Vision%3A+Lynda+McKinney+Lambert&amp;qid=1781904603&amp;s=books&amp;sprefix=walking+by+inner+vision+lynda+mckinney+lambert%2Cstripbooks%2C106&amp;sr=1-1\">Here.<\/a> Dad was an avid vegetable gardener, hunter, woodsman, and a hot-tempered Irishman with dark red hair.\u00a0 He worked in the local Steel Mill until his retirement when the mills shut down and our city lost\u00a0 all the jobs that our fathers had.<\/p>\n<p>The painting of my father standing on the Fombell Bridge shows him in his final decade of life.\u00a0 I owned the Fombell General Store during the early 80s, and Dad loved to come out there to the country to visit while I was working. I snapped a photo of him one day, standing on the bridge and looking down at the stream below.\u00a0 I painted this picture from one of the photos of that day.\u00a0 When I was not busy with customers, I had a little easel set up in the office and I painted there during the winter months when business was slow.<\/p>\n<p>I think this painting of Dad, shows the internal loneliness that many children\u00a0 carry inside of them when their fathers are not a\u00a0 part of their everyday life for those early years of our childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Dad\u2019s life was a hard one.<\/p>\n<p>His mother died\u00a0 when he was 3 years old. Life for a little boy who lost his mother turned into a living nightmare for him.\u00a0 Not only did he lose his mother, three of the five children also died in early childhood.<\/p>\n<p>Of the five children born to Effie Pearl and David Garfield, only 2 would live to be adults. Dad, and his sister, Cora Bell.<\/p>\n<p>One afternoon as I was standing in the driveway with Dad, he shared a little bit about his early life. Dad was in his 70s at that time.\u00a0 It was the first and only time I ever saw my father shed tears.\u00a0 \u201cI can\u2019t remember her face, \u201d he said through the tears.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>__Scripture<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe Lord your God carried you, as a father carries his son.\u201d \u2014Deuteronomy 1:31<\/p>\n<h3><strong>__Daily Action Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>If you are fortunate enough to have your father still living, please don\u2019t take it for granted.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t waste a day that you can talk with him or be with him.<\/p>\n<p>I still have the Father\u2019s Day\u00a0 card I never got to give to my father as he died\u00a0 shortly before\u00a0 that day.<\/p>\n<p>I feel regret each time I think of how close it came to being in his hands and I can imagine how he would be smiling as he read it.<\/p>\n<p>Dad and Mom were at my home on\u00a0 Friday\u00a0 evening.\u00a0 They told us Dad was to see a new heart specialist on Monday morning.<\/p>\n<p>We had fresh strawberries and\u00a0 vanilla ice cream as we sat together on the patio.\u00a0 \u00a0Our daughter and her little baby were here visiting from Wisconsin. We took photos of Dad\u00a0 in the house, holding his new granddaughter and his daughter standing beside him.<\/p>\n<p>At 6 a.m. on Saturday, I got a call from Mom.\u00a0 Dad died suddenly upon rising in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>But here is where I tell you the most beautiful thing about my father!<\/p>\n<p>When Dad was sixty years old, he woke my mother up one night.<\/p>\n<p>Dad had a miraculous encounter with\u00a0 our Father in Heaven that night.<\/p>\n<p>He asked my mother to pray with him, and he asked Jesus to come into his heart and be his savior.<\/p>\n<p>At age sixty, twelve years prior to this last night on earth, my father\u00a0 knew that when God called him to come home, his name was written in the Lamb\u2019s Book of Life, as he entered the Pearly Gates and into Eternity.\u00a0 I know my father is in the Great Cloud of Witnesses, cheering me on today.<\/p>\n<p>Dad&#8217;s most prominent memory for me, was one afternoon as we stood outside together \u00a0in the driveway . Dad, shared a little bit about his early life. My students traveled to several European countries with me each summer and our home base was in Salzburg, Austria for a month of learning.
