Beyond the Facade – Post #715<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Recently, I listened to a broadcast that gave\u00a0 me a lot to think about. That\u2019s always a good thing, to listen to a conversation and to think about it in relationship to my own understanding of a topic of interest.<\/p>\n

I appreciate good conversations with thoughtful discussions and respectful explorations of current topics or about books and reading.<\/p>\n

Here is my thoughts on listening and responding :<\/p>\n

Develop a sense of awareness of what is being spoken or what we are reading.<\/h3>\n

Take your time\u00a0 to form an opinion about ideas.<\/p>\n

Be conscious of the topic and how it is presented..<\/p>\n

Contemplate what you are\u00a0 hearing.<\/p>\n

Listen to the tone of voice.<\/p>\n

When it feels like something is not quite right, it probably isn’t.\u00a0 Trust your\u00a0 inner spirit.<\/p>\n

Think about what is at the core of this idea.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Personally, I like to have time to think \u2013 and I don\u2019t rush into a conversation for simply speaking about anything until I\u2019ve had time to think about it for a while.\u00a0 When a topic interests me, I usually want to do some research into it and search out the place where an idea came from initially.\u00a0 Everything has a history, and often something is far more complex than we imagined initially.<\/p>\n

My best practice is to investigate a matter before I begin repeating it to others.<\/p>\n

I look for the primary source of that topic or that thought.\u00a0 Be a person who takes time to explore ideas and trace them back to their beginnings before you begin to share them in your writing or in your conversations.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s develop the ability to express our\u00a0 own journey of seeking out what is true or good in our world.<\/p>\n

Students are fortunate to have a teacher or professor who encourages them with academic challenges and helps them grow in their ability to analyze what they have read, or heard.<\/p>\n

We need to examine the\u00a0 roots to determine where our own current thinking developed from initially.<\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

I believe knowing our foundational roots brings a great insight into our classroom studies, as well.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

And the roots of our own country are deep in ancient Greek thinking as well as\u00a0 in Biblical history of humanity and its stories of nations and people.\u00a0 In viewing our American architecture\u00a0 in our cities for government buildings reveals the influence of Greece to the founding fathers and the people who developed our civilization and foundational thoughts.<\/p>\n

It is impossible for us to even begin to sort out the current\u00a0 upheaval and violence of life in\u00a0 America right now without the knowledge\u00a0 and studies of our roots that are deeply embedded in\u00a0 ancient and rational\u00a0 Greek thought, and in Biblical History,\u00a0 and the origins of\u00a0 all humanity.\u00a0 What’s wrong with this picture?<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During my years of teaching\u00a0 as a\u00a0 tenured professor of fine art and humanities,\u00a0 I\u00a0 taught in our core\u00a0 Humanities program at\u00a0 a private Christian College. Every course in our college curriculum\u00a0 taught the Socratic method, and it was the foundation of all courses in the college.<\/p>\n

Our core curriculum required an intensive 4-course\u00a0 block of studies in Humanities, based in philosophical discussion and studies and the foundation of living out the gospel of Jesus Christ and the\u00a0 studies of the Bible as the Word of God. We explored all the major philosophies of this world, from antiquity to the present post, postmodern time we live in now.\u00a0 Our students were able to view everything\u00a0 in their\u00a0 major of studies,\u00a0 through this lens of examination through deep studies of the world cultures and philosophical history.\u00a0 I taught and lectured in all four courses at the college and taught in Europe during the summertime each year.\u00a0 Together, we visited many places\u00a0 that we had studied in our courses.<\/p>\n

I\u00a0\u00a0 have the\u00a0 mindset of a Christian,\u00a0 and we see the world through a different lens than the masses of people who are wandering around in confusion\u00a0 and anxiety without the compass\u00a0 of God\u2019s living Word, to guide them.\u00a0 My roots are in Jesus and his gospel of salvation\u00a0 and wholeness through trusting God, our Creator, and knowing that nothing in this world will separate us from his love and his purpose for our life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Today, it\u2019s rainy here which is fantastic for this will enable me to get the final weeding done in my flower beds later this week \u2013 and get my plants brought back inside after spending the warm weather on the porch.<\/p>\n

Today, I am dedicating my\u00a0 activities to reading.<\/p>\n

So, I am sparked to read and write today because I listened \u00a0\u00a0to a broadcast.\u00a0 Thanks for inspiring me to think beyond the\u00a0 facade.<\/p>\n
