On November 25, I received this letter from Charles Portolano, Editor of\u00a0 The Avocet: A Journal of Nature Poetry.\u00a0 <\/em>This magazine will be mailed out in January 2025.<\/p>\n

Dear Lynda:<\/p>\n

Hello, wow, what a wonderful array of Winter poetry in this print issue of The Avocet, a Journal of Nature Poetry.\u00a0 We had many submissions to pick from, which is always hard, but the issue has turned into a Winter wonderland.<\/p>\n

Congratulation, we are pleased to publish your poem,<\/p>\n

Midwinter Landscape Geography<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

in this Winter issue.\u00a0 Thank you for sharing such wonderful work.<\/p>\n

Since you are a subscribing\/supporting member of the Avocet community you will receive your print copy.<\/p>\n

Midwinter Landscape\u00a0 Geography<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mist<\/p>\n

Ice storm<\/p>\n

Darker days<\/p>\n

Wintry weather<\/p>\n

Invites reflection<\/p>\n

Nature-painted grey sky<\/p>\n

Time to shelter \u00a0in hemlocks<\/p>\n

Evergreen trees harbor house wrens<\/p>\n

Red cardinals on snow-covered trees<\/p>\n

–<\/p>\n

Lighter days will come soon enough<\/p>\n

After a spell of\u00a0 winter\u2019s depths<\/p>\n

Northern lights astonish us<\/p>\n

Dazzling brilliant hues<\/p>\n

Shorter day, longer night<\/p>\n

Captivating scenes<\/p>\n

All surround<\/p>\n

Peaceful<\/p>\n

End<\/p>\n

Gem<\/p>\n

Earthy<\/p>\n

Origins<\/p>\n

Geographic<\/p>\n

Rutilated sea cliffs<\/p>\n

Ancient quartz \u00a0overhangs<\/p>\n

Pristine old -growth forest streams<\/p>\n

Hiking trails in national parks<\/p>\n

Yosemite\u2019s cliffs shaped by rockfall<\/p>\n

Note:\u00a0 To write this poem I used the Nonet form, which is a 9-line poetry form.<\/p>\n

However, I also created these Nonet forms in combination with the ACROSTIC form.<\/p>\n

If you look down the left side of each line, the letters will form a stem from the words I used that you see in the poem’s title.\u00a0 Therefore, It is an acrostic + Nonet combination.\u00a0 I enjoy writing like this because of the “shape” the poem has when you look at the entire poem.<\/p>\n

What do you see?<\/p>\n

Look for the shape.<\/p>\n

Look at the letters on the left side.\u00a0 This is called “the stem” of the poem.<\/p>\n

Do you see what the letters\u00a0 are spelling out as you look from top to bottom of the poem?<\/p>\n

Did you see some words that are new to you?<\/p>\n
