In a sequence of seven dreams, winter brings danger and struggle, also “dusty stars \/ [that] leave faint traces \/ on snow-covered path.” Images of darkness, wind, sunlight, fog, and frost reveal winter’s rich variety until the end of the book when winter’s margin overlaps with spring’s promise of “fanfare and ballyhoo.” Each carefully crafted poem depicts a winter of sensual abundance. I’m grateful for the reminder to look for surprises in the season–what’s hiding in its darkness, its contrasts.
