I post a new poem each day in April.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n

 <\/p>\n

\n

Morning at 104 River Road\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n

(Day 5 \u2013 NPM \u2013 April 5, 2023<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Morning at 104 River Road<\/strong><\/em><\/h4>\n

begins with a snort.<\/p>\n

My canine alarm clocks<\/p>\n

trot up the white carpet stairway.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I hear muffled steps.<\/p>\n

Miss Mitchell and Miss Dixie Tulip<\/p>\n

pause at the landing<\/p>\n

give me the signal.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I am awake instantly.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve had a lifetime of practice<\/p>\n

waking up before dawn<\/p>\n

to meet the needs of others.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Like a good Mother, I hear<\/p>\n

a soft cry, tentative snort, muffled<\/p>\n

cough, or explosive sneeze.<\/p>\n

I need just a little sound of distress<\/p>\n

to go into action.<\/p>\n

Instantly,<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

For the felines in the family,<\/p>\n

I respond to quiet<\/p>\n

gestures, sudden movements.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I no longer bring crying babies<\/p>\n

comfort on my lap<\/p>\n

before dawn<\/p>\n

while village resident\u2019s slumber.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mornings are still lively today.<\/p>\n

I am outside walking my dogs day or night.<\/p>\n

But, dogs and cats demand<\/p>\n

an early morning breakfast at 5 a.m.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I wait for them all to finish eating.<\/p>\n

I will wash the six dirty red bowls.<\/p>\n

This morning at 104 River Road<\/p>\n

It\u2019s always a furry morning wake-up surprise.<\/p>\n
