Early December Landscape<\/em><\/h4>\n

 <\/p>\n

I hold my saturated blue umbrella<\/p>\n

overhead<\/p>\n

step carefully<\/p>\n

on the ancient deer path.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My graceful white dog walks<\/p>\n

gingerly ahead on sodden<\/p>\n

leaf-carpeted terrain.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The steady drizzle<\/p>\n

creates translucent mist<\/p>\n

descends on our bodies<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Wet dog sniffs and leads<\/p>\n

along the well-worn path<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

My feet slosh and sink<\/p>\n

over rain-soaked ripples<\/p>\n

tread slowly on rising swells<\/p>\n

discarded leaves<\/p>\n

twigs<\/p>\n

broken branches<\/p>\n

tossed beneath naked trees.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I close my eyes<\/p>\n

stop visual impressions<\/p>\n

that dominate this sphere.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

With eyes shut<\/p>\n

I listen to my feet<\/p>\n

rustle<\/p>\n

and sink into<\/p>\n

mounds of deep gold<\/p>\n

and russet browns.<\/p>\n

soothing rain falling,<\/p>\n

flowing creek<\/p>\n

tumbling rocks<\/p>\n

rain drops plunking<\/p>\n

on the old umbrella<\/p>\n

a single crow flying over<\/p>\n

our rural Pennsylvania world<\/p>\n

scattered branches snapping<\/p>\n

cars swishing along the highway<\/p>\n

crossing the wide concrete bridge<\/p>\n

west to Ellwood City<\/p>\n

and east to Portersville.<\/p>\n
