{"id":13361,"date":"2022-12-03T08:06:51","date_gmt":"2022-12-03T13:06:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/?p=13361"},"modified":"2024-09-06T18:12:17","modified_gmt":"2024-09-06T22:12:17","slug":"a-poem-my-old-house-lingers-from-the-professors-journal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lyndalambert.com\/wordpress\/a-poem-my-old-house-lingers-from-the-professors-journal\/","title":{"rendered":"From Lynda&#8217;s Journal ~ My old house lingers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">A Poem<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">~ My old house lingers ~<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\">From lynda&#8217;s Journal<\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>by<br \/>\n<\/em><\/h4>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><em>Lynda McKinney Lambert<\/em><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><em><strong>The Poem<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>My Old House Lingers \u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My old house lingers on a ridge<\/p>\n<p>above a cavernous stone quarry<\/p>\n<p>cut into a cove by the rushing waters<\/p>\n<p>of ancient Connoquenessing Creek.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>This fifty-mile-long waterway<\/p>\n<p>is a classic western Pennsylvania<\/p>\n<p>stream that flows in a serpentine path.<\/p>\n<p>Rushing water meanders, turns, twists and dips<\/p>\n<p>as it races to join the wide expanse<\/p>\n<p>of the Beaver River heading south towards Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>My black suede boots trundle slowly<\/p>\n<p>through crisp russet withered leaves<\/p>\n<p>blown down by cold winds.<\/p>\n<p>Broken branches snap,<\/p>\n<p>shift, snare and tangle<\/p>\n<p>round my happy-go-lucky legs.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The deer path widens between<\/p>\n<p>rows of tall leafless watchers<\/p>\n<p>guarding shady pathway.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I listen to \u201cThe Connie\u201d in all seasons,<\/p>\n<p>day and night. \u00a0We have lived side-by-side<\/p>\n<p>for over five decades. My children and grandchildren<\/p>\n<p>wade in the shallow waters and climb \u00a0the rocky shore.<\/p>\n<p>We gather empty clam shells<\/p>\n<p>that raccoons discarded during their night<\/p>\n<p>of dining at the creed\u2019s edges.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As I look up into the clear<\/p>\n<p>aquamarine light this morning<\/p>\n<p>a familiar black crow<\/p>\n<p>clutches the highest oak tree branch.<\/p>\n<p>It yells out resounding warnings<\/p>\n<p>with sharp staccato notes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I holler back to this pitch-black crow<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I will be bringing the sunflower seeds soon.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Give me a few minutes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0I\u2019ll be right back with your breakfast.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*<\/p>\n<p>Poem written November 21, 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a9Lynda McKinney Lambert, 2022. All rights reserved.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><\/h1>\n<h1><em><strong>*<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<h1><em><strong>The Backstory<\/strong><\/em><\/h1>\n<p>Charles Portolano, my friend and editor of <strong><em>The Avocet<\/em><\/strong> publications challenged me to write a poem based on a message I sent him as an e-mail.<\/p>\n<p>His challenge stayed on the front burner of my thoughts for that entire day, and night.
