#The Poem:<\/strong><\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

A Dream of Drawing in the Dark (written in 2002)
\n<\/em><\/strong><\/h5>\n

\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

When drawing in the dark<\/p>\n

visions and forms appear<\/p>\n

then vanish quickly<\/p>\n

moving across<\/p>\n

The inner vision<\/p>\n

of my night sky.<\/p>\n

A panoramic vision<\/p>\n

ever changing<\/p>\n

highly charged<\/p>\n

molten lava<\/p>\n

when I draw in the dark<\/p>\n

in the middle of the night.<\/p>\n

The Backstory:<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Since we just adjusted our time here in western Pennsylvania to daylight savings time, I think this poem makes sense right now.<\/p>\n

With the altered time in place, we now have a very early twilight and night descending. By 5:30 pm, it’s dark!\u00a0 It makes no sense to me to do this time change – we still get up in the dark, and now, we have one less hour in our afternoon before it gets dark.<\/p>\n

In my writing over the decades, dark and darkness is a recurring theme in all seasons. Darkness is a metaphor that shows up consistently in my poetry.<\/p>\n

I wrote this poem about drawing one night when I was in my room at\u00a0 a farm house, Bachmannhof , in Gr\u00f6<\/b>dig, Austria. I lived\u00a0 with the Ziglar family every summer for fourteen years when I was teaching my “Drawing and Writing in Salzburg,” travel\/study course.\u00a0 My students earned college credits through Geneva College.<\/p>\n

It’s a fact, I do not sleep a lot and I am typically up during the night because I get visions and inspirations for my writing and artworks.<\/p>\n

My daughter, Salome’ Yaromey, was with me that summer.\u00a0 I did not want to turn on a light and wake her up that night. Instead, I sat in a comfortable chair with my drawing materials and I drew in my sketchbook in the dark.<\/p>\n

Exciting things happen in our artwork when we don’t see what we are doing. Instead, our intuition takes over and our body does the drawing.\u00a0 You know, art comes from the entire body, not the eyes.\u00a0 In fact, we make art with our brain. The brain controls all the movements of our body and that is how we make art. I celebrated this night by writing a poem about my experience as I drew from memory and with my body that night.<\/p>\n

Making art integrates the body, mind, and spirit.<\/p>\n
