This “freeform” poem was written on “LABOR DAY,” this year.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I was thinking about the labor of American Poets and what we do every day<\/p>\n

I read this poem aloud at the Writer’s Workshop on Tuesday evening, this week.<\/p>\n

Poem -01_Sept-02_Labor Day<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

First Monday in September<\/p>\n

I celebrate American poets<\/p>\n

solitary workers of mysteries<\/p>\n

scribblers of \u00a0laborious artifacts<\/p>\n

forged, sliced, tumbled, shaped<\/p>\n

marks and strokes on fragile pages<\/p>\n

love letters, condolences, invitations<\/p>\n

relics carved in marble or stone<\/p>\n

engraved on park benches<\/p>\n

displayed on museum walls<\/p>\n

post cards<\/p>\n

saved<\/p>\n

in transparent pages<\/p>\n

The Backstory:<\/h4>\n

As part of our post card exchange during 2024, I mail a post card with a poem and original artwork to Carol Farnsworth, Ada, Michigan.<\/p>\n

I wrote this poem on Labor Day, this year. I was thinking about how a poet labors in the literary fields every day. I recognize the historical lineage that a poet is very aware of when working on their own poems.<\/p>\n

Some are financial blessings that I did not know were coming to me.<\/p>\n

I receive awards and sales, for my books, writings and artworks.<\/p>\n

Some days I am invited out to lunch, or simply to go for a walk in the park with a friend.<\/p>\n

Blessings come to us all the time if we are open to them.<\/p>\n
