~Even in Arcadia~<\/h1>\n

Lynda\u2019s first published poem was \u201cEven in Arcadia,\u201d which appeared in The Daily Athenian<\/em>, Morgantown, WV, while she was a graduate student pursuing the MFA degree in painting from 1989\u20131991. She wrote the poem in 1988, when she was an undergraduate student in the BFA program in painting. When she entered graduate school for the MFA in painting, she finally had the courage to send out her poem to the newspaper, and it was published immediately. Many other publications followed on the heels of that first publication as she continued work on her degree.<\/div>\n

Lynda\u2019s first published poem was inspired by the Baroque painting of Nicolas Poussin<\/a>\u200e (1594\u20131665), Et in Arcadia Ego<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Arcadian mysteries<\/p>\n

written on a tomb<\/p>\n

words of another time and place<\/p>\n

carved<\/p>\n

deeply<\/p>\n

cut in a stone.<\/p>\n

In the evening<\/p>\n

shepherds leave their flocks<\/p>\n

turn away<\/p>\n

to kneel before the tomb.<\/p>\n

Damp grass<\/p>\n

crushed<\/p>\n

beneath weight of knees<\/p>\n

they reach out<\/p>\n

to touch<\/p>\n

tracings<\/p>\n

in the stone<\/p>\n

and pray<\/p>\n

for the key<\/p>\n

to unlock the mystery of Arcadia.<\/p>\n

We, too,<\/p>\n

stand in Arcadia<\/p>\n

frozen in time<\/p>\n

suspended in tight air<\/p>\n

that cannot breathe<\/p>\n

trying to understand the words<\/p>\n

that will not be known.<\/p>\n

Nearby<\/p>\n

a smiling face<\/p>\n

gown flowing in airless breezes<\/p>\n

static<\/p>\n

a sentinel that came<\/p>\n

to show the way.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
