 <\/p>\n

Daily Awakenings<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He awakens slowly<\/p>\n

shielding his eyes<\/p>\n

watching<\/p>\n

through half-closed lids.<\/p>\n

silently enters the restart<\/p>\n

of a typical functioning day.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He splashes in a warm shower<\/p>\n

balances a thin torso<\/p>\n

overcautious legs, bony feet<\/p>\n

A\u00a0virtually undetectable<\/strong>\u00a0shiver<\/p>\n

moves up his spine<\/p>\n

as he\u00a0<\/strong>speaks of trivialities.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He lies in his safe nest<\/p>\n

In a state of anxiety<\/p>\n

where everything is in order<\/p>\n

gloves, towels, pillows, blankets<\/p>\n

doesn\u2019t know the day or season.<\/p>\n

cognitive decline is irreversible<\/p>\n

and incurable.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He lays out vitamins and meds<\/p>\n

on the green cotton towel<\/p>\n

arranged perfectly in a row<\/p>\n

begins the daily count<\/p>\n

\u201c1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7\u201d, he whispers<\/p>\n

Gathers up his defense mechanisms.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On a good day he<\/p>\n

picks colorful markers<\/p>\n

makes geometric drawings<\/p>\n

and calculates more numbers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Evenings are spent<\/p>\n

reclining on his soft bed.<\/p>\n

The progression does not happen<\/p>\n

All at once.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He views colorful fragments<\/p>\n

watches tiny ants, fledging sparrows, traffic,<\/p>\n

tree-tops blowing in the summer breeze<\/p>\n

shielding the silence<\/p>\n

in his world where words<\/p>\n

no longer matter.<\/p>\n

Backstory From the Professor’s Journal~<\/p>\n

Sometimes I live with an idea for many years before it ripens into a completed poem.\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n

Daily Awakenings, is a poem I began to write in California around 1992.\u00a0 Originally, I started writing the outline that described a personal encounter and observations over several months.\u00a0\u00a0 This poem\u00a0 remained incomplete until I picked it up in 2021. I thought about the years between the poem’s beginning and my present life. To get this poem to where it is today, took many years of circumstances and maturity to bring it to life.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

I wait for the unfolding of my poems. I never rush my work. I linger with them in solitude. I wait on the poem\u00a0 to guide me.\u00a0 Creation can be a very lengthy process as we cover a wide terrain\u00a0 on our journey. I honor the poem and cherish the time we spend together in the process. Patience has many rewards.
\n<\/em><\/p>\n

Time is always on my side.\u00a0 When I am working on a poem, I am unaware of the passage of time. It is of no importance to me. The poem will unfold naturally as we work together.<\/em> ~Lynda McKinney Lambert<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
