Primavera: When Spring Break is Over<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n

\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Caribbean mornings<\/span><\/p>\n

earthy paradise drinks<\/span><\/p>\n

dark island coffee with hot cream<\/span><\/p>\n

tiny homegrown yellow pl\u00e1tanos<\/span><\/p>\n

early sunrise breeze with honey rolls<\/span><\/p>\n

rental cars spiral up the mountain<\/span><\/p>\n

we view abandoned plantations<\/span><\/p>\n

hacienda tourists in a group<\/span><\/p>\n

I wear my new green hat for the photo<\/span><\/p>\n

afternoon rum factory tours by boat<\/span><\/p>\n

sandy beaches never closed<\/span><\/p>\n

coconut drinks every day<\/span><\/p>\n

coral reefs and rusty piers<\/span><\/p>\n

sun burned skin<\/span><\/p>\n

soothed with aloe vera lotion<\/span><\/p>\n

we\u00a0hike steep mountain paths<\/span><\/p>\n

cross over bridges with wooden planks<\/span><\/p>\n

immerse our bodies in mountain streams<\/span><\/p>\n

scream with pleasures under torrid sun<\/span><\/p>\n

moan under a throbbing cold waterfall<\/span><\/p>\n

Caribbean nights under the stars<\/span><\/p>\n

dancing in the streets with strangers<\/span><\/p>\n

two mountain top dreamers in darkness<\/span><\/p>\n

Tony sings Puerto Rica n songs to me<\/span><\/p>\n

whispers phrases n my ear<\/span><\/p>\n

(Always in Spanish.)<\/span><\/p>\n

If a volcano erupts<\/span><\/p>\n

there may be delays<\/span><\/p>\n

flights are never on time<\/span><\/p>\n

things are often unpredictable<\/span><\/p>\n

when spring break is over.<\/span><\/p>\n

Backstory:<\/span><\/h3>\n

The “I” in a poem is seldom the poet speaking.<\/p>\n

“I”\u00a0 can even be a combination of several people,\u00a0 or voices,\u00a0 who are speaking throughout the poem.<\/p>\n

*<\/strong><\/h1>\n

I wrote this poem from notes in my travel journals combined with my own personal memories.
\nI participated in a course taught by several colleagues at Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA, for many years.
\nEach professor taught a section of the course during the spring semester. During the semester of studies in Puerto Rican Culture, the class traveled to Puerto Rico over spring break. In addition, we conducted classes on-location at various locations in PR.\u00a0 Each professor taught lessons in their particular\u00a0 discipline for this course. I presented lectures on the art and artists of Puerto Rico.\u00a0 We visited museums and galleries where the students studied\u00a0 the actual artworks.\u00a0 This course was a popular one\u00a0 because of the travel & study opportunities for teachers and students.<\/p>\n

In 2007, I lost most of my eyesight suddenly and without warning.\u00a0 \u00a0I retired from teaching in 2008,<\/p>\n

Nevertheless, I continued my annual trips to Puerto Rico for quite a few years with my husband, Bob.<\/p>\n

Our final trip to Puerto Rico was the spring of 2013.\u00a0 Bob was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in the spring of 2014.<\/p>\n

He was no longer able to travel from that time on.\u00a0 During all the years that we were able to take students, Bob was one of our drivers on the trip.\u00a0 We both have so many good memories of those years with students and our love of Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

I dedicate this article to my husband, Charles Robert\u00a0 (BOB) Lambert<\/p>\n
