Final Sunday Morning\u00a0\u00a0<\/em> – A Poem for the last Sunday in January, 2022.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The final Sunday morning before<\/p>\n

January steps aside<\/p>\n

I feel an urgency<\/p>\n

secure this memorable moment<\/p>\n

before<\/p>\n

February bursts onto this wintry stage.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It’s 3 degrees this morning.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I wake up in semi-darkness<\/p>\n

Turn to look out the eastern window<\/p>\n

Long icicles form a glimmering curtain<\/p>\n

tall evergreen trees<\/p>\n

planted during the succession<\/p>\n

of my long-life sequence.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I reach downwards<\/p>\n

pet Miss Dixie Tulip<\/p>\n

sleeping in her bed.<\/p>\n

She moves gently when I touch her.<\/p>\n

I say,<\/p>\n

“It’s time to go outside for a little morning walk.”<\/p>\n

I gather her soft brown body<\/p>\n

both hands balance her<\/p>\n

Carry her downstairs,<\/p>\n

connect her bright pink leash<\/p>\n

and a small harness.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We step cautiously<\/p>\n

into the wintry morning mist<\/p>\n

Miss Dixie takes the lead<\/p>\n

as she always does<\/p>\n

runs to the clearing,<\/p>\n

a grassy spot<\/p>\n

surrounded by accumulated deep snow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our monochromatic landscape<\/p>\n

glimmers with soft colors<\/p>\n

winter hues are so elegant<\/p>\n

Like music.\u00a0 I hear a melody drifting<\/p>\n

From the distant northern sky<\/p>\n

Invisible crow calls out<\/p>\n

five shaky beats.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This is a moment of truth<\/p>\n

my shiny purple boots catch the rhythm<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Crunch Squeal<\/p>\n

Crunch Squeak<\/p>\n

Crunch Squawk<\/p>\n

Grind Slip<\/p>\n

Crunch Step<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We call back to the hidden crow.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sounds of exhilaration<\/p>\n

A distant crow in the north shouts<\/p>\n

Five short beats into the early morning mist<\/p>\n

I listen as a response from the west<\/p>\n

comes from beyond<\/p>\n

frozen Connoquenessing creek<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I turn my head towards that distant crow call<\/p>\n

stand a moment to admire<\/p>\n

appreciation<\/p>\n

spotty snow-covered Hemlock tree<\/p>\n

standing in the distance.<\/p>\n

We saved the best for last.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n
