From the Professor’s Journal

“I am immersed in a river”

I am immersed in a river that

flows in every season.

I rest in the shade of

Hemlocks and ferns,

gather water-worn stones from

the whirling floor of a cool eddy.

In my red canoe I skim the surface of

the emerald-green mountain river

while russet and gold autumn trees

prepare for winter’s respite.

Backstory:

I wrote this poem from memories of floating on the Allegheny River on warm afternoons in the mountains of Western Pennsylvania. My husband (Bob) and I had a red canoe.  We would stop to gather small, smooth river stones from quiet eddys some days. I have always lived near a creek. The sound of water flowing in all seasons is music that surrounds me. This internalization of the rushing water is a life-long experience because this music is playing inside of me. I am complete when I am aware of its presence.
